I had always avoided TMP however because of the terrible costumes they were wearing on the back of the VHS case. When I finally saw it on TV a few years ago, however, I quite liked it and found the Veeger idea to be rather clever in linking the story to the present day (perhaps a harbinger of Star Trek IV).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7629130.post-1146758165503399452006-05-04T11:56:00.000-04:002006-05-04T11:56:00.000-04:00I loved this Analysis of TMP and look forward to m...I loved this Analysis of TMP and look forward to more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7629130.post-1146661276339296532006-05-03T09:01:00.000-04:002006-05-03T09:01:00.000-04:00I do think Spock's TMP arc was substantial -- gues...I do think Spock's TMP arc was substantial -- guess it didn't come off that way in the post. Indeed, I think Spock and Decker have the significant arcs in the movie, although Decker's ends up being more of an afterthought because the ending was written pretty much on the fly.

One thing I didn't quite articulate in this post is that Spock also becomes a Special Guest-Star Of The Week. I meant to say his arc doesn't connect up with the rest of the plot because he may well view the Enterprise as a means to an end -- he's there because it's logical for him to be there. As Bones says, "lucky for you we just happened to be going your way." The difference, of course, is that Spock stays with the ship: "my task on Vulcan is complete." Like Kirk, he knows he'll be happiest on the Enterprise with his friends; and thanks to V'Ger, he knows it's OK to be happy.

As for Bones, I guess he stays for much the same reason. There's probably a little bit of him that thinks he has to keep an eye on Jim and Spock.

Looks like I should have worked on this one a little more, but sometimes you just have to get the raw stuff out, you know?Tom Bonduranthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07209820912557263080noreply@blogger.com
